The BC Cancer Agency remains committed to reviewing data and research about screening in these age groups and have these inform our screening guidelines.
For those aged 50 to 74 meanwhile, evidence clearly supports screening every two years and we want as many women as possible in this age group take advantage of the benefits of regular screening. This updated screening mammography policy is a great example of how research through the Agency is helping to expand our understanding of cancer, using the latest evidence to dramatically improve cancer detection and treatment in BC.
We look forward to partnering with the BC Cancer Agency on the launch of a joint public campaign to help raise awareness of the importance of screening mammograms later this month. Research has shown a 25 per cent reduction in deaths from breast cancer among women who are screened through the Screening Mammography Program of BC.
The BC Cancer Agency , an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing the mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer.
It provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia by working with community partners to deliver a range of oncology services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care.

Breast Ultrasound. Breast ultrasound is frequently used to evaluate breast abnormalities that are found with screening or diagnostic mammography or during a physician performed clinical breast exam.
Ultrasound has the benefit of producing images from many different angles. Ultrasound is excellent at distinguishing between solid tumors and fluid filled cysts. Breast ultrasound can also be used to evaluate lumps or masses that are hard to see on a mammogram. Breast ultrasound is very useful in imaging patients with palpable masses.
The ultrasound probe is placed just above the palpable mass and it can be visualized painlessly and quickly. Ultrasound of the breast is commonly used to classify breast lesions in the following types of women:.
Women with a lesion that cannot be well classified with mammography alone. Breast MRI. Indications for contrast-enhanced breast MRI. A breast MRI is performed when physicians require more information than a mammogram, ultrasound or a clinical breast exam can provide.
