Plextor's reputation for building fast, versatile drives continues with the PXA. It's not only a champ for its speed at reading and writing DVDs, it's also the only burner that can shoehorn more than MB of extra data on an ordinary CD. Plextor's generous software bundle includes Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator, though not the latest and greatest version as evidenced by the bug we encountered when installing it.
You also get PlexTools, a dream utility for tinkerers and power users alike. Plextor's solid warranty includes toll-free phone support, a rarity for optical drives. Although the PXA is packed with features designed to appeal to advanced users, we admire the way Plextor acknowledges novices.
The drive includes an illustrated quick-reference guide that not only covers installation but also provides a brief overview of each of the bundled software apps. Even more impressive is the page printed manual, by far the most comprehensive we've seen bundled with any optical drive.

Aside from that, the Plextor PXA yielded no surprises on the outside. Then again, it's what lies at the heart of the drive that really matters. Next, we'll take a closer look at Plextor's PlexTools Professional software suite to see how it manages some of the PXA's more advanced features.
Search all. Reviews News Blogs Shop. Article Index. Playback problems would still be there due to the poor quality of the media, indicated by the scans. Since the updated firmware, I've burned about without a coaster. I did suggest to Plextor there were problems with the ver 1. I DID always see the extreme cycling of the cache during a burn, though. Since 1. Happy burning. Comments posted by John from United States, July 07, I've been through Pioneer and I've been through Sony. None of these companies have made drives that overly impressed me.
So reliable, so fast, so good. On my Sony DRU, it claims it can burn reliably above single speed, but I've never seen that and it's single speed burn is less than reliable.

Comments posted by Karl from Sweden, June 08, When this drive works it works well but why oh why is it so pernickety about the media? It's more than a little annoying to discover that you have bought a pack of disks which it won't even recognise.
Life is too short to feed it a variety of media just to see what it will accept. Hardly a carefully worked out product. The so-called software provided is a bad joke. Don't even bother to clutter your PC with it. Rated this writer 3 of It worked for about a week and then it couldn't see any DVDs I put in it. I contacted Plextor and they had me run the self-test on the unit. Determined the unit was bad. I had to send it to Plextor at my cost for replacement. This whole thing took about three weeks which was a total pain.
I guess I should have bought it at a local retailer, then I could have returned it quicker. My new writer seems to be working well and I've burned about 25 DVDs with it.
I did install the software that came with the unit Roxio , but it seemed to be buggy and difficult to use. The only problems I have with the drive is 1 I don't like Roxio, and 2 they should have paid for shipping, since I only had the unit for two weeks. Besides that I like it just fine.
